This is a nostalgic page showing how I kept my birds in the early 1990’s. My cages were placed in a shed in my parents’ back yard. The rest of this page appears as it did when I first started this page in 1995.

The shed is heated during the winter. In the shed, I have four cages each of which can be divided into three cages for breeding. The cages are used as a winter home for most of my birds, and when it gets warmer, they are used for breeding cages.
Drawers
Each cage has a drawer for easy cleaning. In addition the fronts of each cage can be removed – also for easy access for cleaning. Each drawer is emptied every 4 days. I use newspaper in the drawer, and put sand on top of it. Don’t use newspaper unless you change it often, as the birds will try to use it as nesting material after a few days.
Water drinkers
I use external drinkers, as this speeds up the tast of changing the water. Drinkers must be cleaned often.
Baths
Zebra finches like to bathe, so a bath is provided for each. The baths must be cleaned often – especially during summer – to keep them free from algae.
Cups
I have a number of cups for seed, rearing food and grit/seashells. Cups should be cleaned regularly.
Nestbox
Nestboxes (12 x 12 x 12 cm) are provided during the breeding season.
