Zebra Finches stay together in pairs of one male and one female, but both will mate with others occasionally.

This is one of the reasons why breeders recommend keeping Zebras in pairs, rather than colonies: otherwize you cannot be sure which birds are the parents of which chicks. And you need to know that in order to keep accurate breeding records.
