Seed

The zebra finch diet consist of a seed mixture for small birds. This should be made up_x000D_
of different kinds of millet and canary seed as well as other seeds. Millet sprays are_x000D_
also appreciated. It is important, that zebra finches always have access to food. If they_x000D_
are too fat, then they need more exercise, not less food.

Greenfood

In addition to this, zebra finches like many greens, such as dandelion leaves, lettuce,_x000D_
chickweed, apples, etc. Make sure you get any greens from a non polluted area. For_x000D_
instance picking dandelion leaves from the roadside is not a good idea…

Calcium

_x000D_
In general birds should always have access to some form of calcium. Usually cuttlefish_x000D_
bone and/or sea shells are very popular, but so are egg shells from regular chickens. If_x000D_
you do use egg shells I would suggest microwaving the shells for a few minutes (or heating_x000D_
them in a regular oven if you don’t have a microwave) in order to kill any bacteria_x000D_
(Salmonella). Let the shells cool off before feeding them to the birds.

Normally, zebra finches should always have access to fresh water.

Rearing food (nestling food)
_x000D_
_x000D_
You should be able to find a rearing food (or_x000D_
nestling food) at your local petshop which should be suitable. If not, you can always try_x000D_
soaking some dry (not stale) bread in water. Squize the water out of it, so that it is_x000D_
moist, but not really wet, and give this to the birds every day. Any rearing food, bought_x000D_
or homemade, should be changed at least once a day._x000D_
